Reggie the Cashier is having his monthly maintenence check

X This cashier is closed.

Tim says:

A “cashier” is a person. They’ve closed a person?? Is the cashier a robot which the store has simply turned off??

You could say “This cashier window has been closed,” but what has actually been closed is the cash register.

By the way, I’m always a bit amused by the various translated apologies on signs in Japan, such as “Sorry to trouble you” on this one. Of course this is a cultural thing. For Americans, this strong apology seems unnecessary on a sign like this. At most, in the US this sign might say “Sorry, this register is closed,” but many such signs will not contain any apology at all. It’s almost like, “This register is closed. If you don’t like it, that’s your problem!” haha

O This register is closed.
