Smile-kun, you’ve been very good today

Happy with smile (photo by Tim Young)

X Happy with smile!

Tim says:

This is a difficult one to correct.

There’s no doubt that it’s strange English. In part it’s simply because “Happy with a smile” would be more grammatically correct.

But even then it doesn’t sound natural. Maybe because, if you’re happy, it’s most likely that you are smiling. So it seems unnecessary to say so.

Also, “Happy with ~” sounds like it means that you are pleased with that thing or person.” For example, “My son did his chores around the house today, so I’m happy with him.” But I don’t think the car rental company who made this sign wants to say that they are pleased with their smiles!

Of course they want to say that their employees are smiling and friendly. So they could use a classic English slogan like:

O Service with a smile

Ayumi says:

Timの言うとおり、どう直したらよいのかがなかなか難しい。 おそらく日本語の感覚では「笑顔でハッピー!」なのでしょう。 だとしたら、Be happy with a smile! だったらどうか? What do you think, Tim? (Tim says: “It still sounds strange to me!”)

それとも We’ll make you happy with a smile! 形容詞のhappyがいきなりなのが違和感あり。 それが意味を不明にしている原因の模様。 従業員がハッピーなのか?お客様をハッピーにするのか?両方? この看板を見ればわかるでしょ?ってことでしょうか^^

Baby rest, my baby rest…

Baby rest inside (photo by Tim Young)

X Baby rest inside

Tim says:

Now…  what does this mean?

Does it mean there’s a baby resting in this stall? (Be careful not to wake him! He’ll cry!)

Or…if an “arm rest” is something to rest your arm on, is a “baby rest” something to rest your baby on?! Or, is “Baby Rest” a song by Diana Ross and the Supremes? (Oh, sorry, no. That was “Baby Love”.)

Actually, the comparison to “arm rest” may actually be what the writer of this sign was thinking. But it’s kind of strange. “Baby seat” would be much better.

O Baby seat inside

Ayumi says:

Let’s English Correcting!

Let's Brushing! (photo by Tim Young)

X Let’s Brushing!

Tim says:

Yes, now I am even finding Sign Language photos at the dentist’s. And correcting the English usage of toothbrushes!

“Let’s +[verb]ing” is kind of a classic 和製英語 advertising slogan template, which I haven’t seen much recently. Of course, the verb here should be the infinitive “brush”, not the present progressive “brushing”.

Also, “toothbrush” is one word. Be careful with that, too. I hope this toothbrush’s cleaning ability is better than his English!

O Let’s Brush!

Ayumi says:

Let’s enjoy the summer!

Mr. Hori’s Day

Sundays/Horidays (photo by Tim Young)

X Horidays

Tim says:

I know that many Japanese have trouble with “L” and “R”. It’s understandable. But why not check a dictionary before making your sign, Japan Post?

O Holidays

Ayumi says:

日本人にとって、”L”と”R”は混同しやすい。 でもそれにしてもかなりすごい間違いです。

もともと、holiday は holy day (神聖な日) から変化したもので。 キリスト教の「祝祭日」の意味から一般的な「休日」となりました。 何も意味なく「堀さんの日」が設けられることはありません。

今思い出した “L&R” の混同・・・ お店が新しく開店したときに、”Gland Open” とウィンドーに堂々と書かれていて驚きました。 正しくは、”Grand Opening” です。

Tim says:

“Gland” means 「腺」!
