X Scandinavia’s Smell

Tim says:

What does Scandinavia smell like? Should I hold my nose??

This sign is odd for two reasons.

1) We don’t usually say “~’s smell”; we say “the smell of ~”

2) “Smell” is at best a neutral word, and may even sound a bit negative. So you will never see this word in advertising! Marketers use words like “aroma”, “scent”, and “fragrance”, which sound much more positive and intriguing than plain old “smell.”

It’s worth noting that “scent”, “fragrance”, and “aroma” entered English from French, while “smell” is an old Anglo-Saxon word. Somehow, old Anglo-Saxon words sound more plain and earthy to us, while words that came from French — even if English borrowed them 1000 years ago — sound more attractive or exotic.

“Fragrance” and “scent” sound a bit too much like perfume, while “aroma” is better with coffee or food.

O The Aroma of Scandinavia

Ayumi says:

The Aroma of Scandinavia
