Why do I have to come back to this shelf?

“Return” can be used as both a transitive verb (他動詞) and an intransitive verb (自動詞). Here, it is meant to be a transitive verb, but because there is no object — it doesn’t tell us WHAT we should return to the shelf — it seems as if it’s an intransitive verb, and it means that WE should return to the shelf. But, I wasn’t at the shelf at the beginning! How can I return there?
