You could say “This cashier window has been closed,” but what has actually been closed is the cash register.

By the way, I’m always a bit amused by the various translated apologies on signs in Japan, such as “Sorry to trouble you” on this one. Of course this is a cultural thing. For Americans, this strong apology seems unnecessary on a sign like this. At most, in the US this sign might say “Sorry, this register is closed,” but many such signs will not contain any apology at all. It’s almost like, “This register is closed. If you don’t like it, that’s your problem!” haha

cashierは「レジ係」の人のことなので、人がclosedって？意味がわからない。
「レジ」を言いたいのならば、cash registerまたは、registerだけでも。
珍しく日本語に近い方が「正解」でした！

ところで、Timからのコメントについて。
日本語では、お願いするときに「恐れ入りますが・・・」といちいち謝る。
丁寧とも言えるかも知れないし、回りくどいとも言える。
アメリカでは、あったとしても”Sorry”のみ。
もともと移民の国なので、バックグラウンドも様々。
さらに言葉が上手く通じないこともあるでしょう。
そんな時、いちいち謝っていては大切な伝えたいことが埋もれてしまいそうだ。
単刀直入に必要なことだけ！！
これがアメリカ流なのではないかと私なりに分析。

日本も今後ますます外国人が増えることが予想される。
そのうちに「恐れ入りますが・・・」が見られなくなるかも知れない。
