Now…  what does this mean?

Does it mean there’s a baby resting in this stall? (Be careful not to wake him! He’ll cry!)

Or…if an “arm rest” is something to rest your arm on, is a “baby rest” something to rest your baby on?! Or, is “Baby Rest” a song by Diana Ross and the Supremes? (Oh, sorry, no. That was “Baby Love”.)

Actually, the comparison to “arm rest” may actually be what the writer of this sign was thinking. But it’s kind of strange. “Baby seat” would be much better.

日本語では「ベビーシート」「チャイルドシート」と言うはず。
それなのに、だれかが言い出した謎の “baby rest”

“rest” は動詞ではもちろん「休む」「眠る」
名詞になると、「休息」「眠り」のほか、「(何かを載せる) 台」の意味もある。
armrest (肘掛け)、footrest (足置き) などがこれ。
おそらくこれらに影響されたのでしょうけれど、babyrestはどこか変！！
そもそもあれは赤ちゃんを休ませるためでも寝かせるための物でもないですから。
安全に座っていてもらうための “baby seat” です。

Yes, now I am even finding Sign Language photos at the dentist’s. And correcting the English usage of toothbrushes!

“Let’s +[verb]ing” is kind of a classic 和製英語 advertising slogan template, which I haven’t seen much recently. Of course, the verb here should be the infinitive “brush”, not the present progressive “brushing”.

Also, “toothbrush” is one word. Be careful with that, too. I hope this toothbrush’s cleaning ability is better than his English!

これもよく見かける間違いです。
“Let’s” は、”Let us” の短縮形ですので、使役動詞 let の後の動詞は原形のはず。
なのに “Let’s –ing” としてしまうのは、何となくリズムが良いからでしょうか？

ずいぶん前に娘が通っていた塾の広告チラシに、
“Let’s growing!”
とあったので電話したことがあります（笑）
勉強を教えるはずの塾が間違った英語を使っていてはイメージダウンですから・・・

もしかしたら
No smoking (禁煙)
No littering (ポイ捨て禁止)
などで使う –ing に影響を受けてしまっているのかも知れません。
今週はお盆休みの方もいらっしゃるでしょうか？

I know that many Japanese have trouble with “L” and “R”. It’s understandable. But why not check a dictionary before making your sign, Japan Post?

日本人にとって、”L”と”R”は混同しやすい。
でもそれにしてもかなりすごい間違いです。

もともと、holiday は holy day (神聖な日) から変化したもので。
キリスト教の「祝祭日」の意味から一般的な「休日」となりました。
何も意味なく「堀さんの日」が設けられることはありません。

今思い出した “L&R” の混同・・・
お店が新しく開店したときに、”Gland Open” とウィンドーに堂々と書かれていて驚きました。
正しくは、”Grand Opening” です。

“Gland” means 「腺」！

Wow. That’s a pretty elementary mistake! “Emergency” begins with a vowel sound, so the indefinite article (不定冠詞) should be “an” rather than “a”.

By the way, please notice that I said “vowel sound”, not “vowel”. Some words are pronounced beginning with a vowel sound, even if the first letter is a consonant. For example, “an hour”.

最初に見たときには驚きました！
だって、声を出して読んでみるとすぐわかりそうな、、、

in a emergencyってとっても言いにくいです。
「母音の前の不定冠詞は、aではなくanになる」って中学１年で習った記憶があります。

ところで、「母音字」ではなく「母音」であることに注意です。
スペリングだけを見ると「母音字」でなくても、音が母音であれば不定冠詞は “an”です。
たとえば、単語にMが１つだけ含まれるのであれば、

There is an M.

「エム」って母音から始まりますので。
とっても間違いやすいですので要注意！
