Is this a construction company or a Pokemon?

We evolve for the 100th anniversary. (photo by Tim Young)

X We evolve for the 100th anniversary.

Tim says:

This sign raises a lot of questions about this construction company. What do they evolve into? What is it the 100th anniversary of? (Presumably, of this company, but it doesn’t say that!) Their evolution is happening only because of the anniversary — not for any other reason?

Unfortunately, when I took this photo I didn’t think to keep the Japanese from being partly blocked by the tree! But I think what they’re trying to say is what I’ve written below. Note that I’ve used “growing”, because they used 成長 in the Japanese part, and it sounds more positive than “evolve”; also, I made it “our 100th anniversary”, because you need to state whose anniversary it is!

O We are growing as we move toward our 100th anniversary.

Pick a door! Any door!

Please do not lean on a door (photo by Tim Young)

X Please do not lean on a door

Tim says:

Yes, you guessed right: this is another example of “a/the” confusion.

“A” is not specific. Therefore, “a door” could be ANY door. It sounds as if this sign is telling us to never lean on any doors, ever! (Although we would be more likely to write such a sign using the plural form: “Please don’t lean on doors.”)

Of course, this sign is telling us not to lean on a specific door that is near the sign, so “the” is needed.

O Please do not lean on the door

Ayumi says:

Please do not lean on a door.

Is this sign TOTOly wrong?

For all sports of Japan (photo by Tim Young)

X For all sports of Japan.

Tim says:

The use of “of” here sounds a little awkward. I thought about whether we should say “all Japan’s sports” instead, but actually, I think it’s a little strange to use possessive here at all.

I think we would be more likely to use “in”:

O For all the sports in Japan.

Notice that I also added “the”. “All sports” by itself is fine, but we’re not referring to all sports; rather, we’re specifically referring to all the sports in Japan. Therefore, “the” feels necessary, because “all the + noun” sounds more specific than “all + noun”.

Ayumi says:

We have English mistake, too

We have currency exchange machine (photo by Tim Young)

X We have currency exchange machine

Tim says:

I know that using “a” and “the” correctly is a big problem for many Japanese. But wouldn’t that have been a good reason to have a native speaker check this sign?

“Currency exchange machine” is countable. There is only one in this bank. The sign is not referring to something that the reader already knew about, so it’s correct to use “a” here, rather than “the”.

O We have a currency exchange machine

Ayumi says:

たかだ “a” されど “a” 。

Call the grammar police!

Police is here! (photo by Tim Young)

X Police is here!

Tim says:

Sorry, Takei-san. That’s not correct English at all!

First of all, we would say “The police”, not just “police”. (In some cases, “police” without “the” might be used in news reporting. But seldom in conversation.)

“The police” refers to a group of people, so it is treated as a plural form. Therefore, “is” is also wrong.

O The police are here!

Ayumi says:

The police are here!

“Enjoy the rich taste while correcting our English”

stamp

X Enjoy rich taste in relaxing time

「Enjoy a rich taste in a relaxing time.」

O Relax and enjoy the rich taste of [brand name] Beer

best plates

X We serve you best Wine and best plates

O We serve you the best wine and the best dishes.
